ASCII Width Guide: Compare 40, 80, 120 and 200 Columns

Choose an ASCII width with real same-image comparisons, downloadable text and settings for README, Discord, portraits and image exports.

Start at 80 columns for a README, around 40–60 for a compact chat mark, and 120–200 when image detail matters. These are starting points, not platform limits. Check your actual destination, especially on a phone.

What does ASCII width mean?

Width is the number of character cells in each row. More columns preserve finer shapes but produce longer text lines. In this converter a square source uses about 0.48 times as many rows as columns: 80 columns produces 38 rows. Width changes detail and space requirements; it does not fix a proportional font.

One fox, four widths

The same geometric fox source and README Mark recipe are used throughout. Only width changes. Simple characters, tonal balance 1.10, brightness 0, contrast 18, sharpen 12, saturation 100, background cleanup off, dithering off, invert on, color off.

A portrait needs different detail

The Prism portrait is an AI-created portrait artwork, not a photograph of a real person. It contains softer tones than the fox. Dense characters, tonal balance 1.60, brightness 0, contrast 8, sharpen 20, saturation 115, background cleanup 98%, dithering off, invert on, color on. Only width changes across these four results.

What if more columns do not help?

A busy background or weak silhouette may still disappear at 200 columns. Try a tighter crop, a simpler subject or a different character set. If the art looks tall rather than merely wide, follow the proportion checklist.
